Introduction to Alchemy (Updated for patch 3.1.3)

If you are looking for an informative guide to Alchemy then look no further. An Alchemist mixes herbs to make elixirs, Oils, Flasks and potions, so in order to level up efficently you will need to combine this skill with Herbalism or have enough gold to buy the herbs.

It is a very useful talent to have for all character classes – Spell casters can create mana potions, Melee fighters can create healing potions, and you can create potions to sell or hand out to get WoW love!

You will need four types of Vials for the potions and elixirs: Empty ones for lower-level potions, Leaded ones for mid-level and Crystal and Imbued for higher-level potions.

This is the levelling scale:

Alchemy Apprentice Skill Level 1 – 75

First, you must yourself a trainer in the city of Old Azeroth and begin your Alchemy Apprenticeship. Make 59 Healing Potions using 59 Empty Vials, 59 Peace Blooms and 59 Silverleafs. These will come in handy later in the game.
Alchemy Journeyman Skill 50 - 150

You will need your trainer to teach you Alchemy Journeyman. Make 50 Lesser Healing Potions using 50 Briarthorn and 50 Minor Healing Potion. Then make 30 Healing Potions (30 Briarthorn and 30 Bruiseweed) using  the Leaded Vials.

Alchemy Expert Skill 125 - 225

Again get your trainer to teach you Alchemy Expert. Make 15 Lesser Mana Potions (Mageroyal, and Stranglekelp) with 15 Empty Vials. You will need to make 30 Greater Healing Potions (Liferoot and Kingsblood) using 30 Leaded Vials and 25 Elixir of Agility (Stranglekelp and Goldthorn) using Leaded Vials.

Higher-level alchemists can perform transmutations on elemental materials and some metals for use with other tradeskills. But before an alchemist can perform transmutations, they must create a Philosopher's Stone.

Alchemy Artisan Skill 225 - 300

First you will need to make 5 Elixir of Greater Defense of Steelbloom and Goldthorn, using 5 Leaded Vials. Then make 15 Superior Healing Potions of  Khadgar's  and Sungrass, with 15 Crystal Vials. At skill level 231 make a Philosopher's Stone using 4 Firebloom, 4 Iron Bar, 4 Purple Lotus and 1 Black Vitriol. After this you will need to make 19 Elixir of Detect Undead using 19 Arthas' Tears and 19 Crystal Vial.

When you get to level 251 – 265 make 15 Elixir of Greater Agility with Sungrass and Goldthorn using 15 Crystal Vials and finally make 20 Superior Mana Potions using 20 Crystal Vials of Sungrass, and Blindweed. Just for the record Elemental essences can also be transmuted. Essence of Water can be transmuted into Essence of Air and Essence of Undeath can be transmuted to Essence of Water...and so on.

Alchemy Master Skill level 300 - 375

Here you will need to find your trainer in the Outlands to become a Alchemy Master.  Begin with making 20 Major Healing Potion using 40 Golden Sansam, 20 Mountain Silversage, and 20 Crystal vial. Then move on to make 10 Volatile Healing Potions with Golden Sansam and Felweed using 10 Imbued Vials. Finally at this level make 15 Elixir of Healing Power using Golden Sansam and Dreaming Glory using 15 Imbued Vial.

Grand Master Alchemy Skill leveling 350-450

To learn Grand Master Alchemy you will need to be level 350+ alchemy and have the Wrath of the Lich King expansion and travel to Northrend. You can learn most of the recipes you need from the following Grand Master Alchemy Trainers:

• Dalaran's Alchemy Shop (north Dalaran): Linzy Blackbolt
• Alliance, Valiance Keep (Borean Tundra): Falorn Nightwhisper
• Alliance, Valgarde (Howling Fjord): Lanolis Dewdrop
• Horde, Warsong Hold (Borea Tundra): Arthur Henslowe
• Horde, Vengeance Landing (Howling Fjord): Wilhelmina Renel

You should be able to buy most of the supplies at the Auction House if you have the gold. If you'd like to save time looking for herbs but don't have the gold check out our gold guide reviews.

You will need 10 Resurgent Healing Potions of 20 Goldclover then 5 Icy Mana Potions of 10 Taladra's Rose. From 365-380 make 15-20 Spellpower Elixirs of 15-20 Goldclover & 15-20 Tiger Lily (Turns yellow at 375, but will resell for a profit to casters).

At Level 380-385 make 5 Potions of Nightmares with Goldclover & Taladra's Rose. At 385-390. 5 Elixir of Mighty Strength using Tiger Lily. 5 Elixir of Mighty Fortitude using 20 Goldclover. 10-15 Elixir of Mighty Agility with 20-30 Goldclover & 20-30 Adder's Tongue (which yellow at 400).

As a side note you may unlearn a specialization in alchemy, and then select a new specialization. It may be worth considering taking Potion or Elixir mastery, and then switching to Transmutation but remember you will need speak to the correct specialist to learn and unlearn that mastery.

To continue make 5 Runic Healing Potions of Goldclover & Icethorn, 20 Runic Mana Potions with 40 Lichbloom & 20 Goldclover (turns yellow at 415). Then 10 Earthsiege Diamonds with Dark Jade, Huge Citrine and Eternal Fire (there is no cooldown for crafting Meta gems - if no one else is doing it on your server you can make gold from selling these everyday). Finally at level 435-450 make 15 Flasks of the Frost Wyrm using 75 Icethorn, 75 Lichbloom & 15 Frost Lotus.
